Dr. Benjamin Sommer, professor of Bible at the Jewish Theological Seminary, will be The Emanuel Synagogue’s scholar-in-residence on Friday, Sept. 15 through Saturday, Sept. 16.
On Friday, Sept. 15, Dr. Sommer will deliver a Thought for Shabbat during Minha/Kabbalat Shabbat/Maariv at 6 p.m. A Shabbat dinner prepared by Emanuel Sisterhood will be held at 7:15 p.m. RSVPs are required. At 8:30 p.m., Dr. Sommer will give a lecture, with light refreshments to follow.
On Saturday, Sept. 16, Dr. Sommer will give the sermon at Shabbat services. A Kiddush luncheon sponsored by Faith Helene will follow. That evening, Dr. Sommer will speak at 9 p.m., right before Selichot services.
The Shabbat dinner costs $20 per person for adults; children, ages 5-12 and college students, are $10 per person. Send checks payable to The Emanuel Synagogue to the office by Sept. 10.
