Frequently Asked Questions

Sisterhood offers learning, leadership, personal growth and camaraderie for the women of our synagogue. We educate and raise funds to support the synagogue and other Jewish organizations. We are involved in activities that enrich our congregation and provide educational, philanthropic and social opportunities for the women of the Emanuel. The Emanuel Sisterhood is affiliated with the North Atlantic Region of the international organization, Women’s League for Conservative Judaism.

Board meetings are usually held monthly. Our general program meetings are held in the evenings and are publicized on the synagogue website, in the weekly synagogue e-news, and on the “Emanuel Synagogue Sisterhood” Facebook page. Be sure to check for details.

Sisterhood runs a wide variety of programs and fundraisers, providing an opportunity for women to learn and socialize. In the past, we’ve held talent shows, fashion shows, and vendor/craft shows, a dance and also a dueling pianos evening. We host an annual Mah Jongg tournament in March. We’ve hosted interesting speakers on topics such as CBD and its background, Jewish Genealogy and how to find one’s ancestors. We are playing Bingo on Zoom. We have an annual Sisterhood Shabbat, typically in January, coordinated with national Women’s League Sisterhood Shabbat. Our Sisterhood members, complete with a lay rabbi, participate and lead the service, reading Torah and chanting a Haftara. We give a gift to each Bar/Bat Mitzvah child.

Sisterhood runs the Judaica Shop to purchase kippot, tallism, mezzuzot, Kiddush cups, Shabbat, Hanukkah and Passover items, jewelry, hostess gifts, and so much more. Our prices are very competitive. We accept MasterCard, Visa, checks and cash. Hours: by appointment. Questions? Please contact Debbie Bettan at 860.231.1861 or Lisa Tesser at 860.232.1665.

Our Membership Vice President, Beth Goldberg, or any one on the board will be happy to talk to you about becoming a Sisterhood member. Leave a message with the synagogue office and someone will return your call, (860) 236-1275. If you are a new Emanuel member, your first year of membership is free. We also give free memberships to our Bat Mitzvah girls until they turn 22. Our fall meet and greet with new and current members is annually held during Sukkot, in the Sukkot, weather permitting. Our paid up membership evening, whether in-person dinner or virtual is another highlight of Sisterhood to hear about who we are and what we do and a chance to socialize and sign up to get involved. We have had entertainment from aspiring Broadway singers from the Hartt School at the University of Hartford for our October 2019 paid up dinner, and a singer, Joni Lambert doing major celebrities like Barbra Streisand, Carole King and Stevie Nicks for our October 2020 virtual paid up evening.

Sisterhood Membership dues are $42 a year.

Definitely! Women from ages 13 to 90+ actively participate in Sisterhood.

We invite you to get involved in Sisterhood. You can meet many talented and interesting women. We know that many of you are balancing family and work, so if you don’t have the time to get involved with planning activities, events or programs, please consider supporting our fundraising activities. We have many virtual programs on Zoom during these exceptional pandemic times. Please watch your synagogue e-blasts for
announcements. If you are a member and on Facebook, please look for an like our page to see what we are doing.
